Chennai,  Oct 16:
Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has readied more than 1,000 pumps, including 500 tractor-mounted pumps, to tackle waterlogging and flooding during the northeast monsoon.
The civic body identified 219 waterlogging-prone locations across the city earlier this year. Stormwater drains have been constructed at 93 locations, while work is under way at 19 other locations. Drainage sumps have also been installed at 21 locations.
Perungudi zone has emerged as the most vulnerable, with more than 40 locations identified as prone to waterlogging. Sholinganallur, Anna Nagar and Tondiarpet are among the other zones with over 20 vulnerable locations each.
The corporation has also kept 1,189 vehicles and other pieces of equipment ready for rescue and relief operations. The preparedness measures come as the city braces for seasonal rainfall and possible flooding.
