Kyiv, Oct 19:
A Russian airstrike killed a woman and injured three other people in Ukraineâs capital, Kyiv, overnight, damaging a subway station, a 25-storey residential building and several other structures, including a medical facility, city authorities said on Monday.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the attack struck the left bank of the city. Explosions were heard during the overnight assault, according to a Reuters witness. The damage to residential and public infrastructure once again highlighted the risks faced by civilians as Russia continues its military campaign against Ukraine.
The attack came amid renewed diplomatic efforts to end the war, which began with Russiaâs full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the United States had resumed sharing critical intelligence with Kyiv after a brief pause. The information is important for detecting and responding to Russian missiles, particularly those that travel at high speeds and leave limited time for air-defence systems to react.
US peace envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner also held discussions with Zelenskyy during a recent visit to Kyiv as Washington seeks to mediate an agreement to end the conflict. The renewed intelligence-sharing arrangement could strengthen Ukraineâs ability to anticipate attacks and protect key locations, although it does not remove the immediate threat posed by continued Russian strikes.
The latest attack underlines the gap between diplomatic initiatives and conditions on the ground. While international efforts to negotiate an end to the war continue, civilians and critical infrastructure remain exposed to aerial attacks. The success of any future settlement will depend not only on diplomatic agreement but also on arrangements capable of preventing renewed hostilities and providing lasting security for Ukraine.
