Chennai: “Forty five to 50 per cent of ophthalmic injuries occur at home for children and it is due to negligence shown by the parents. Children are susceptible to eye-related injuries than adults,” said Rajan Eye Care Hospital, chairman and medical director, Dr Mohan Rajan.
Addressing mediapersons here on Tuesday, he said, ahead of Deepavali, to give immediate relief to emergencies related to eye, the hospital has launched a state-of-the-art ophthalmic trauma services. The facility was inaugurated by State Health Secretary Dr J Radhakrishnan.
Speaking about the facilities, Mohan Rajan, said, “Emergency trauma care cannot be attended by a single surgeon. With eight doctors specialising in sensitive parts of the eye and machines imported from other countries, we plan to provide immediate relief to the patient. If the injury is not treated immediately, it manifests later into a serious way which could be retinal tear and detachment.”
“It is necessary to admit the patient within an hour which is called as the golden hour,” he said. Mohan Rajan emphasised on the necessity to consider eye injuries as an emergency situation. As injuries are common during festivals, the hospital also came out with pamphlets explaining the do’s and don’ts which will be distributed to all the educational institutions in the city.
