Chennai: The problem of stray cattle on main roads of Anna Nagar is not new and these animals often bring the flow of traffic on busy roads to a standstill.
“These stray cows cause traffic jams and accidents. Their dung causes dirty roads, cluttered parks and clogged sewers. They can take a nap anywhere, even in the middle of the road. Sometimes they get agitated and attack humans as well,” says, Janaki, a resident of Aminjikarai.
“Most cows roaming in the streets are not healthy. They do not live on grass or other hygienic foods. Most of them constantly eat food from garbage and leftovers. Even though it may not be obvious, many of them are actually diseased or sick,” she added.
Mani, a motorist, said, “These stray cows present a great risk to both commuters and cows. Ideally these should be removed and sent to sub urban area where they can live their natural life. Strict penalty should be imposed on owners of these stray cattle for violating. Their water and power connections should also be disconnected.”
He also mentioned that sometimes stray cattle succeed in entering the main roads from the nearby Covuum areas. Almost every roads in Anna Nagar is struggling to cope up with the menace of stray cattle.
“The overflowing garbage bins in and around Anna Nagar seems to be the right place for stray cattle and dogs to find food. These cattle are fed, no sooner they get food all the stray animals wandering nearby come there and trouble goes to the next-level,” said, Gayathiri, a resident of NSK Nagar.
She suggest that these animals could be tied elsewhere, for there are residences nearby and people staying there are put to trouble. Corporation official said, “We are impounding the roaming cattle on main roads from markets and dumping area. We have fined the owners and warned them.”
