Chief Minister M.K. Stalin officially launched ‘Project Nilgiri Tahr’ from the Secretariat in Chennai. This project, with an estimated budget of Rs 25 crore, is set to make a substantial impact on the preservation of the Nilgiri Tahr, a unique and endangered mountain ungulate native to the Western Ghats.
Recognizing the urgent need to conserve and protect this iconic species, the government of Tamil Nadu has initiated ‘Project Nilgiri Tahr’ with a multi-faceted approach.
The project seeks to enhance our understanding of Nilgiri Tahr populations, their distribution, and ecological requirements. This vital information is fundamental for effective conservation strategies.
The re-introduction of Nilgiri Tahr to their historic habitats is a pivotal aspect of the project. This involves carefully planned translocations to restore the species to areas where they once thrived.
‘Project Nilgiri Tahr’ aims to address immediate threats to the species, including factors like habitat loss and fragmentation, which have contributed to their declining numbers.
