In a significant development, the police have released CCTV camera footage confirming the involvement of those arrested in connection with the murder of Tamil Nadu BSP chief K Armstrong. The footage released on Sunday, shows the Dalit leader being brutally attacked with machetes by a six-member gang outside his under-construction house in Perambur on July 5.
The city police have stated that the 11 individuals arrested in connection with the 52-year-old politician’s murder are the ones identified in the video footage. This release comes amid growing allegations from Bahujan Samaj Party cadre, its supremo Mayawati, VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan, and other opposition leaders that the ‘real’ killers had not been apprehended.
Earlier in the day, K Thiruvengadam (33), one of the eleven suspects arrested shortly after Armstrong’s murder, was shot dead by city police near Madhavaram. According to police reports, Thiruvengadam, a known history-sheeter, allegedly attacked a policeman and attempted to flee when he was taken to a spot near a lake in Madhavaram where the weapons used in Armstrong’s murder were hidden. Police claimed they shot him in self-defense, and despite being rushed to a government hospital, he was declared dead.
The incident has sparked controversy and calls for an investigation into the police encounter. Opposition leaders, including Edappadi K Palaniswami and K Annamalai, have raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding Thiruvengadam’s death and demanded a thorough probe.
The release of the CCTV footage aims to provide clarity and support the police’s claim that the arrested individuals are indeed the culprits behind Armstrong’s murder. However, the death of Thiruvengadam in a police encounter has added a layer of complexity to the case, with opposition figures questioning the transparency and conduct of the investigation.
As the case continues to unfold, the Tamil Nadu police face increasing pressure to ensure justice is served and maintain public confidence in the law enforcement process. The verification of the suspects through the CCTV footage is a critical step, but the controversy surrounding Thiruvengadam’s death indicates that more scrutiny and investigation may be necessary to address the concerns raised by opposition leaders and the public.
