Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai has openly criticized the DMK alliance parties for their decision to boycott the tea reception hosted by Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi in honor of Independence Day. The event, which is traditionally attended by leaders from across the political spectrum, was notably snubbed by the DMK and its allied parties, sparking a political controversy in the state. The tea reception, held annually on Independence Day, is seen as an occasion for political leaders to set aside their differences and come together in a spirit of unity and national pride. However, this year, the DMK-led alliance chose to skip the event, citing various political reasons. The boycott has been interpreted by many as a symbolic protest against Governor Ravi, with whom the DMK government has had several disagreements, particularly over issues related to governance and state autonomy.
In response to the boycott, BJP state president Annamalai emphasized the importance of engaging in politics with a sense of responsibility and civility. He stated, “Politics should be conducted where it is necessary to be civil, and where it is needed to fight for the people.” Annamalai’s remarks suggest that while it is important to engage in political battles where necessary, there are occasions where political decorum should take precedence, and events like the Independence Day tea reception are such occasions.
The boycott by the DMK alliance is the latest in a series of tensions between the state government and Governor Ravi. The two sides have clashed on various issues, including the Governor’s remarks on state governance and his perceived interference in state affairs. The DMK and its allies have often accused the Governor of overstepping his constitutional boundaries, leading to strained relations.
