In preparation for the upcoming monsoon season, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has enlisted approximately 60 citizen volunteers to assist with flood mitigation efforts across the city. Known for its recurring flood issues during heavy rains, Chennai is taking proactive measures to address potential challenges this year.J. Kumaragurubaran, GCC Commissioner, recently met with the volunteers to outline the strategic plans for the monsoon season. The discussion covered crucial aspects such as food and water distribution, resident rescue operations, coverage areas, and managing water stagnation. Kumaragurubaran emphasized the need to effectively channel the resources and enthusiasm of volunteers, noting that many have the means to help but lacked an organized approach.
The decision to engage with volunteers ahead of the monsoon season aims to ensure their effective deployment and coordination. The volunteers have already prepared and submitted detailed flood reports to the GCC, outlining potential problem areas and areas needing attention.
Sneha Rajeev, a volunteer from a local start-up, highlighted that the team would work closely with local ward members to enhance coordination and response efforts. This collaborative approach is expected to streamline the mitigation process and improve the city’s preparedness for the monsoon.
The GCC’s initiative reflects a strong commitment to community involvement and preparedness, leveraging the support of citizen volunteers to better manage and mitigate the impact of seasonal flooding. By harnessing local knowledge and resources, Chennai aims to enhance its resilience against the challenges posed by heavy rains and floods.
