Corporation construts wooden ramp at Elliot’s Beach

In a significant move towards enhancing accessibility, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has commenced the construction of a permanent wooden ramp at Elliot’s Beach in Besant Nagar. This initiative is designed to provide easy beach access for the differently-abled and other visitors, reflecting the city’s commitment to inclusivity.
This project follows the successful installation of a similar ramp at Marina Beach, which has been well-received by the public. The new ramp at Elliot’s Beach is expected to further extend these benefits, allowing people of all abilities to enjoy the beach without barriers.
Approved by the Tamil Nadu Coastal Regulation Zone Authority, the construction is estimated to cost around Rs. 1.61 crore. The ramp will span 190 meters in length and 2.80 meters in width, constructed from treated wood to ensure durability and safety.
Officials have assured that the construction will be completed within four months, aiming to have the ramp ready for public use by the end of the year. The initiative is part of a broader effort by the GCC to make public spaces more accessible and inclusive for everyone, particularly those with mobility challenges.
Local residents and visitors have expressed their appreciation for the project, highlighting its potential to make Elliot’s Beach more welcoming and accessible to all. The ramp is expected to become a model for future infrastructure developments in the city, emphasizing the importance of accessibility in urban planning.
Once completed, the wooden ramp will stand as a symbol of Chennai’s progress towards a more inclusive society, ensuring that the city’s beautiful beaches can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of physical ability.
