Following extensive firecracker celebrations across Chennai for Deepavali, the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has taken a hit, with pollution levels remaining high and two locations registering ‘poor’ air quality.
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), real-time data recorded this morning between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. showed Perungudi station with an AQI of 235, classified as ‘poor.’ Similarly, the Velachery residential area recorded a ‘poor’ AQI of 205. Both areas were impacted by the heightened pollution levels due to Diwali fireworks.
Meanwhile, Royapuram, which had previously seen air quality in the ‘poor’ category, has now returned to normal levels. Other parts of the city recorded ‘moderate’ AQI readings, which include:
Alandur: AQI 188, Arumbakkam: AQI 172,
Kodungaiyur: AQI 106, Manali: AQI 106,
Royapuram: AQI 81,.
The average AQI across Chennai stood at a moderate level of 156, based on data collected from seven out of the eight Continuous Ambient Air Monitoring Stations in the city.
