Taut thriller
The Smile Man is indeed a significant milestone for Supreme Star Sarath Kumar, marking his 150th film with a gripping thriller that delves into the mind of a senior cop battling Alzheimer’s while hunting down a serial killer.
The narrative unfolds with a chilling premise: a serial killer who grotesquely manipulates his victims’ faces into haunting smiles. Sarath Kumar, as the veteran cop fighting memory lapses, is compelling, delivering a nuanced performance that balances vulnerability and resilience. His portrayal adds layers to a character struggling with his deteriorating health while racing against time to solve a horrifying case.
Sree Kumar, as the rookie officer seeking guidance, does his part but falls slightly short in bringing the intensity required for the high-stakes narrative. Sijaa provides decent support, while Rajkumar’s attempt at comic relief with one-liners doesn’t quite hit the mark. However, Sarath Kumar’s magnetic presence dominates, ensuring the story remains engaging.
Director Syam’s approach to blending psychological elements with procedural investigation works well in parts, though some sequences feel predictable. The film shines in its technical execution, with Vikram Mohan’s cinematography masterfully building an atmosphere of suspense and dread. The visual language complements the tense narrative, pulling the audience into the story’s dark undercurrents.
The background score amplifies the tension, though it occasionally overpowers the subtler moments that would have benefited from quieter, reflective beats.
While The Smile Man offers a unique take on the cop-versus-killer genre, its pacing in the second half slightly drags, and the rookie cop’s character development could have been stronger. However, Sarath Kumar’s layered performance and the eerie, unpredictable nature of the antagonist keep the audience hooked.
The Smile Man is a worthy milestone in Sarath Kumar’s illustrious career, delivering a blend of action, emotion, and suspense. Despite minor flaws, it’s a gripping thriller that pays tribute to Sarath Kumar’s legacy in Tamil cinema, reminding viewers of his enduring charm and versatility. Fans of crime dramas and Sarath Kumar will find this film to be an engaging watch.
