In a significant gesture of recognition, a traffic island on Luz Church Road, near Kauvery Hospital in Ward-123 under Teynampet Zone (IX), has been officially renamed the ‘Iyakkunar Sigaram K. Balachander Traffic Island’. The inauguration ceremony, held on Thursday, December 26, 2024, was a momentous occasion attended by several dignitaries, including Tamil Nadu Minister for Municipal Administration and Water Supply K.N. Nehru, Mayor R. Priya, Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran, and distinguished members of the Tamil film industry.This renaming is a tribute to the legendary film director K. Balachander, renowned for his revolutionary contributions to Tamil cinema. The decision to honor Balachander in such a public way was made following the directives of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who has been instrumental in acknowledging the iconic director’s legacy.
The unveiling of the new name board marks a permanent tribute to K. Balachander, who is fondly referred to as “Iyakkunar Sigaram” (the Pinnacle of Filmmaking) for his pioneering work in the Indian film industry.
