Tamil Nadu bans sale of egg-based mayonnaise for a year

The Tamil Nadu government has imposed a one-year ban on the sale, distribution, and use of egg-based mayonnaise across the state. The official order has been published in the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette.
According to the state government’s announcement, mayonnaise has become a common ingredient in street food and fast food items like shawarma, fried meats, and tandoori dishes. However, the government has raised serious health concerns regarding mayonnaise made from eggs.
“Egg-based mayonnaise poses a significant health risk to consumers,” the order stated. “To prevent potential harm, the use and sale of mayonnaise made with eggs must be stopped immediately.”
The government has warned that those who violate the ban will face strict penalties. These include fines, cancellation of licenses, and legal action under relevant laws.
Consumers have also been advised to be cautious while purchasing food products containing mayonnaise. The government has urged the public to check ingredients and labels before buying such items.
The ban is part of the state’s effort to ensure food safety and prevent foodborne illnesses.
