In a bid to modernise city infrastructure and ease daily commutes, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and Southern Railway have rolled out major updates in parking and suburban rail services.A smart parking system has been introduced at Marina Beach and nine other prime locations like Anna Nagar and Nungambakkam. Digital payment is now mandatory, with charges fixed at ā¹5 for two-wheelers, ā¹20 for cars, and ā¹60 for buses and vans. The Tamil Nadu Ex-Servicemen’s Association has been tasked with digital fee collection, using QR-coded receipts. The project operates under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to minimise costs and boost efficiency. For grievances, the public can call 1913.
Meanwhile, Southern Railway has increased the frequency of AC Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) train services in Chennai from six to eight trips daily. The decision follows persistent demand from commuters, especially during peak hours. The new schedule, effective May 2, aims to better match travel patterns, ensuring more convenience for suburban passengers.
Together, these initiatives mark a step forward in making Chennaiās urban mobility smarter and more commuter-friendly.
