Beat the heat in Chennai: What to wear to stay cool

As the blazing Agni Nakshatram (Kathiri Veyil) season grips Chennai, the mercury continues to soar, pushing temperatures beyond 40°C and making it one of the hottest spells of the year. According to Chennai-based fashion consultant Sneha Rajendran, “Agni Nakshatram is no time for heavy fabrics or dark colours. The golden rule is to stick to cotton, linen, and other breathable materials. Go for loose fits that allow airflow and choose light shades like white, beige, pastel blue, or lemon yellow which reflect sunlight.”

What to Wear:

For Women: Cotton salwars, kurtis, and palazzos in pastel tones are popular choices. Long skirts and cotton sarees are also ideal.

For Men: Loose cotton shirts, linen trousers, or simple cotton dhotis keep the body ventilated. Even half-sleeved kurtas or light t-shirts are practical.

Footwear: “Closed shoes can trap heat. Opt for sandals or open-toe footwear,” advises podiatrist Dr. Aravind Kumar, adding, “Your feet need to breathe just as much as the rest of your body during this time.”

Protective Accessories Are a Must

Sun hats, umbrellas, and UV-protection sunglasses have become staples in Chennai wardrobes. “Carrying an umbrella or wearing a wide-brimmed hat can cut down direct sun exposure by nearly 60% and make a real difference,” says dermatologist Dr. Priya Vishwanath.

Stay Hydrated and Avoid Synthetic Clothes

Health experts also caution against synthetic fabrics like polyester, which trap heat and sweat, potentially leading to rashes or infections. “Your skin needs to breathe. Wearing synthetic materials during peak heat hours can cause more harm than we realize,” warns Dr. Priya.

S. Ramesh, an autorickshaw driver in T. Nagar, shares: “I’ve switched to white cotton shirts and a towel around my neck. It helps soak up the sweat and protects from the scorching sun.”

Meenakshi, a college student from Anna Nagar, says, “I prefer wearing long cotton skirts and carry a water bottle always. Also, sunscreen has become part of my routine!”
