India ended Day 1 of the second Test against England at Edgbaston on a strong note, posting 310 for 5 at stumps. After early pressure and a brief collapse in the final session, captain Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 114 and a steady partnership with Ravindra Jadeja brought India back into the game.
England began the day with tight bowling, especially from Chris Woakes. The experienced pacer made an immediate impact by removing KL Rahul early and delivering a series of maiden overs that set the tone. His discipline with the new ball kept India in check during the first hour.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Karun Nair then stitched together a fluent partnership, looking in control and rotating the strike well. However, Brydon Carse broke the momentum just before lunch by dismissing Nair, giving England a slight edge going into the break.
The post-lunch session saw India steadying again before Rishabh Pant and debutant Nitish Reddy fell in quick succession, causing a wobble late in the final session. With the score at 199 for 5, England seemed poised to take control.
But Shubman Gill had other plans. Displaying composure and class, the young skipper reached his century and anchored the innings with confidence. He found able support in Jadeja, and together they added an unbeaten century stand, ensuring India closed the day with momentum on their side.
India will now look to build on this strong finish when play resumes on Day 2.
