Director Vetri Maaran announced that his Grass Root Film Company will stop producing films after the controversies surrounding his projects Bad Girl and Manushi. Speaking at a press meet on Monday, he said the challenges of navigating censor regulations and public criticism had made production increasingly difficult.Bad Girl, directed by Varsha Bharath, has faced backlash for its portrayal of children and caste, with the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court ordering its teaser removal in July. Manushi, starring Andrea Jeremiah, was asked to make multiple cuts by the censor board and was recently reviewed by Justice Anand Venkatesh, who acknowledged the film’s bold themes while suggesting modifications.
Vetri Maaran, who recently directed Viduthalai 2, said, “Being a producer is a big challenge. Bad Girl will be our last film, and we are shutting down Grass Root Film Company.”
