U.S. President Donald Trump reached out to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his 75th birthday, extending warm wishes and expressing gratitude for Modi’s role in supporting efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war. The conversation highlighted the strengthening of diplomatic ties between India and the U.S., despite recent strains over trade issues.
Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social to share details of the call. He wrote, “Just had a wonderful phone call with my friend, Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I wished him a very Happy Birthday! He is doing a tremendous job. Narendra: Thank you for your support on ending the War between Russia and Ukraine!” His remarks were seen as both personal and strategic, underscoring India’s growing influence in global conflict resolution.
Responding to Trump, Modi expressed gratitude on X. “Thank you, my friend, President Trump, for your phone call and warm greetings on my 75th birthday.” Modi also stressed that India remains committed to strengthening its Comprehensive Global Partnership with the U.S. while supporting all constructive efforts for peace in Ukraine. His statement reaffirmed India’s consistent position of advocating for dialogue and diplomacy.
The call comes at a time when India has positioned itself as a key player in global discussions on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. While maintaining close ties with Moscow, New Delhi has also engaged with Western powers to encourage negotiations, emphasizing its traditional policy of balancing relationships without compromising its strategic autonomy. Trump’s acknowledgement signals recognition of India’s role as a mediator and bridge between opposing blocs.
