Kiev, Sept 17: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has renewed his call for a joint European air defence system after a Russian missile strike injured 13 people in the central Ukrainian city of Poltava. The attack damaged several residential buildings and left many residents displaced.Zelenskyy said the strike highlighted the urgent need for stronger protection against ongoing Russian attacks, insisting that European nations must work together to create a shield capable of covering the entire continent. He argued that collective security would be more effective than individual defence systems.
Local authorities in Poltava confirmed that emergency crews were on the scene, rescuing civilians from damaged structures and providing medical care to the injured. They warned that the number of casualties could rise as searches continue.
The Ukrainian leader stressed that Russia’s continued strikes on civilian areas demonstrate the Kremlin’s disregard for human life and international law. He called on allies to step up military support and speed up the delivery of air defence systems.
European leaders have expressed solidarity with Ukraine, though discussions on a continent-wide defence network are still in early stages. Some countries support the proposal, while others are weighing costs and strategic implications.
