Tamil Nadu has been recognized as the best-performing state in organ donation for the eighth consecutive year, according to Health Minister Ma Subramanian. At an event organized by the Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu (TRANSTAN) to mark Organ Donation Day 2025 at Kalaivanar Arangam, the minister honored donor families and medical professionals for their significant contributions to transplant services.
Minister Subramanian highlighted that Chief Minister MK Stalin’s initiative had encouraged 522 individuals to donate their organs, while 23,189 people had registered as donors. In 2024 alone, 268 organ donations were recorded, earning Tamil Nadu the Union government’s best state award.
Reflecting on the program’s history, the minister noted that the late Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi launched the cadaver organ transplant program on September 5, 2008, leading to the establishment of TRANSTAN.
Subramanian also announced that starting in the first week of October, all government medical colleges would install uniform plaques at their entrances to honor organ donors. Additionally, under the expanded state health insurance scheme, eight types of organ transplant surgeries are now covered, up from two previously.
