Engaging sports dramaUnni Sivalingam’s Balti, starring Shane Nigam, is a punchy mix of sports drama and gangster action that keeps viewers hooked with its raw energy and layered storytelling. What begins as a tale of friendship and kabaddi soon transforms into an intense saga of crime, betrayal, and survival.
The film follows four kabaddi-loving friends, with Udhayan (Shane Nigam) as their calm, dependable leader. His innocence and shy charm make him relatable, while his bond with his friends forms the heart of the story. Trouble brews when Kumar (Shanthanu Bhagyaraj), impulsive and ambitious, pulls the group into the murky world of local loan sharks. Shanthanu delivers one of his best performances, effortlessly switching between recklessness and vulnerability.
The second half is where Balti truly shines. The kabaddi backdrop gives way to high-voltage gangster drama, filled with suspicion, clashes, and betrayals. Selvaraghavan steals the show as Bhairavan, a ruthless financier with a menacing presence and layered depth. Alphonse Puthren’s flashy Soda Babu and Poorinam Indrajith’s eccentric G-maa add flavor to the gritty setting.
Shane Nigam brings sincerity to Udhayan, anchoring the film with his understated performance, while his chemistry with Shanthanu forms the emotional backbone. Preeti Asrani has limited screen time but adds warmth in her brief role. Sai Abhayankar’s pulsating background score heightens the intensity, giving even quieter moments a sense of urgency.
Balti is not a flawless sports drama, but that’s not its aim. Instead, it embraces pulp action with confidence and thrives as a gangland entertainer. With its gripping narrative shifts, standout performances, and gritty energy, Balti emerges as a solid, engaging watch for fans of action-driven cinema.
