Perambalur, Dec 16: Tamil Nadu’s Transport and Electricity Minister S.S. Sivasankar on Tuesday announced that electricity bills in the state will be calculated on a monthly basis once smart meters are rolled out across households and other connections.Addressing the media, the minister said the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and allied departments are currently facing financial constraints, and efforts are underway to strengthen the system. To this end, tenders have been issued for setting up new substations and procuring modern electrical infrastructure.
Sivasankar explained that with the implementation of smart meter technology, it will become more feasible and efficient to measure and collect electricity charges every month, instead of the existing bi-monthly cycle. Tenders for installing smart meters have already been floated, and the state plans to gradually resolve related challenges as the process progresses.
The minister also urged the public to use electricity responsibly at their homes and in public spaces as part of broader efforts to improve energy management in the state.
The move to monthly billing is expected to align Tamil Nadu’s power billing practices with the smart metering rollout, which advocates say can help users track consumption more accurately and enable better revenue management for the electricity board.
