Victoria Public Hall, one of Chennai’s most iconic heritage landmarks, has reopened after an extensive renovation, marking a major milestone in the city’s heritage conservation efforts. The historic structure located on EVR Periyar Salai was inaugurated by Chief Minister M. K. Stalin under the Singara Chennai 2.0 initiative. The 19th-century colonial-era building was restored at a cost of ₹32.62 crore, with renovation work carried out from March 2023. The project aimed to preserve the hall’s architectural legacy while equipping it with modern infrastructure and safety features.
Key upgrades include seismic retrofitting, complete roof replacement, restoration of original wooden flooring, enhanced façade lighting, and careful preservation of British-era bricks. The renovated structure now meets modern disaster-resilience standards without compromising its historic character.
As part of the makeover, a museum has been set up on the ground floor, while the first floor houses a modern auditorium designed to host cultural programmes, public events, and community gatherings. The restoration is expected to revive Victoria Public Hall as a vibrant cultural hub and reinforce Chennai’s commitment to preserving its heritage while adapting it for contemporary use.
