Davos, Jan 22: United States President Donald Trump expressed confidence on Wednesday that Washington and New Delhi will secure a favourable trade agreement, while lavishing praise on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a “fantastic leader” and “friend” during media remarks at the World Economic Forum here.Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the annual global summit, Trump emphasised the strength of bilateral ties and said both countries are poised to finalise a “good deal” that could significantly boost economic cooperation. “I have great respect for your Prime Minister. He’s a fantastic man and a friend of mine. We are going to have a good deal,” Trump said in an interview.
The comments come amid ongoing negotiations on a Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) aimed at expanding commerce between the world’s two largest democracies. Officials from both sides have been engaged in high-level talks to address issues ranging from tariffs and market access to energy and agriculture, even as some disagreements persist.
Trump’s upbeat tone at Davos followed a period of economic friction between the United States and India, including disputes over tariffs on Indian exports. Despite these challenges, the U.S. President’s public commendation of Modi underscores the personal rapport between the leaders and reflects Washington’s interest in strengthening ties with New Delhi.
India remains a key strategic partner for the United States, with both nations targeting ambitious goals to deepen economic and security cooperation in the coming years. Analysts say Trump’s remarks could inject fresh momentum into stalled trade discussions and help pave the way for enhanced bilateral engagement.
