The Tamil Nadu Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, is scheduled to meet on February 5 to discuss and finalise preparations for the interim budget for the 2026â27 financial year, ahead of the coming Assembly elections. The Cabinet meeting will focus on priority allocations, ongoing programmes, and key expenditure proposals before the budget is presented to the state legislature.
Since the state is heading into polls, the government will present only an interim budget rather than a full annual budget. The Assembly is expected to reconvene in the second week of February for the budget session, which will also be the final sitting of the current Legislative Assembly.
Political observers say that, in light of the upcoming elections and rival partiesâ promises, the interim budget discussions could include proposals to enhance welfare measures, including schemes such as the Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai Thittam. Additionally, public feedback collected through the Unga Kanava Sollunga survey may influence announcements and allocations made in the Assembly.
Ahead of the session, the Cabinet will hold detailed discussions on financial allocations, development projects, and administrative matters at its February 5 meeting, setting the stage for the budget that will follow soon after.
