The second phase of the Blue Flag beach development project at Chennai’s iconic Marina Beach is progressing swiftly, with officials saying that about 90 % of the works are complete and the expanded beachfront facilities are set to be opened to the public by the end of this month. This phase, being carried out opposite Vivekananda House, is part of a larger effort by the Tamil Nadu government and Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to secure Blue Flag certification, an international recognition awarded to beaches that meet high standards of cleanliness, safety and environmental management. The Phase II development — costing around ₹7 crore — includes a range of upgraded amenities designed to enhance visitor experience. These will feature bamboo seating and umbrellas, children’s play areas, watchtowers, selfie points, libraries and separate toilets, along with inclusive facilities for men, women and third-gender users. In addition, the project emphasises environmental sustainability by placing bamboo waste bins and reducing plastic usage across the site. The first phase of Marina’s Blue Flag stretch, developed at a cost of over ₹7 crore near the swimming pool, has already been opened and attracts thousands of beachgoers daily. The continuing work reflects the state’s commitment to transforming Marina Beach into a world-class eco-friendly destination, complementing similar efforts at other coastal spots in Tamil Nadu as part of broader coastal restoration and tourism initiatives.
