Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has defended his government’s handling of the Thirupparamkundram Deepam issue, stating that he acted strictly in his capacity as Chief Minister and not on the basis of personal belief.
In a message released on his 73rd birthday, Stalin said governance decisions must be guided by constitutional responsibility and public interest. He emphasised that personal faith should not be mixed with politics and maintained that the government’s actions were aimed at preserving social harmony and following due process.
The controversy relates to the lighting of the traditional Karthigai Deepam atop the Thirupparamkundram hill, home to the renowned Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple, one of the six abodes of Lord Muruga. The issue has sparked political debate in the State, with opposition parties accusing the government of interfering in religious practices.
Rejecting the allegations, Stalin said the administration had acted responsibly and in accordance with the law. He reiterated that the government remains committed to inclusive governance, safeguarding communal harmony and respecting the sentiments of all sections of society while upholding constitutional principles.
