The much-anticipated Metro Rail project connecting Chennai International Airport to Kilambakkam Bus Terminus has hit a significant delay, with the proposal still pending approval from the Central government despite being submitted nearly a year ago.
According to official sources, the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the corridor has been under preliminary examination by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for over 11 months. The prolonged delay has raised concerns among commuters and transport experts, especially as similar Metro projects in other states have received approvals within a much shorter time frame.
The proposed Metro extension is planned over a stretch of about 15.46 kilometres and is estimated to cost around ₹9,335 crore. It aims to connect key suburban localities such as Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram, Perungalathur and Vandalur, significantly improving transport access in Chennai’s southern corridor.
Once completed, the line is expected to provide seamless connectivity between the airport, major railway hubs and the Kilambakkam bus terminus, benefiting lakhs of daily commuters. The project is also designed as a double-decker corridor, with a Metro line on the upper level and a road network below to ease congestion on GST Road.
Despite receiving administrative approval from the Tamil Nadu government in 2025 and initial funds being allocated for preparatory work such as land acquisition, the project has not progressed further due to the pending central clearance.
Experts and activists have expressed disappointment over the delay, noting that the project could be a “game changer” for densely populated suburbs and may attract significant ridership. At present, lack of efficient connectivity to Kilambakkam—one of Chennai’s major bus terminals—continues to inconvenience passengers.
With no clear timeline for approval, the Airport–Kilambakkam Metro corridor remains in limbo, leaving commuters waiting for a crucial infrastructure upgrade that promises to transform travel in the southern parts of Chennai.
