Tamil Nadu recorded 19,965 suicides in 2024, a disturbing figure that highlights the growing public health concern over substance abuse and its impact on mental health. Officials report that a significant proportion of these deaths were linked to alcohol and cannabis addiction.
Around 71% of the suicides — approximately 14,175 cases — involved individuals affected by alcohol or cannabis use, illustrating the strong correlation between substance misuse and impulsive, self-harming behaviour. Experts note that addiction often worsens existing mental health struggles, making individuals more vulnerable to suicide.
Data further shows that 76% of those who died by suicide were men, while 26% were women, with a small number of cases involving transgender individuals. Other contributing factors included family disputes, chronic illnesses, mental health issues, and financial stress, often overlapping with the effects of substance abuse.
Political and health leaders have condemned the high incidence of deaths linked to alcohol and drugs, urging stronger prevention strategies. Proposed measures include better regulation of substance access, targeted mental health programs in schools and colleges, and wider implementation of community-based support systems.
Experts emphasize that addressing addiction alongside mental health support is essential to reducing suicide rates. The rising numbers underscore the urgent need for comprehensive action to tackle both substance abuse and mental well-being in the state.
