In a bid to bolster its energy generation capabilities, the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) has initiated a tender process to import coal for the operation of the newly inaugurated 800 MW North Chennai Super Critical Thermal Power Station Stage 3. The tender, aimed at meeting the coal requirement for the state-of-the-art power station, underscores TANGEDCO’s commitment to ensuring a reliable and sustainable energy supply for the region.
The North Chennai Super Critical Thermal Power Station Stage 3, inaugurated by the Chief Minister on March 7, represents a significant milestone in Tamil Nadu’s energy infrastructure development. Designed to operate on 100 percent imported coal, the power station is poised to play a pivotal role in meeting the growing demand for electricity in the region.
However, in a strategic move to mitigate costs associated with imported coal, TANGEDCO officials are contemplating a blend of imported and domestic coal for the operation of the supercritical thermal power unit. By opting for a mix of fuels, TANGEDCO seeks to strike a balance between efficiency and affordability, thereby optimizing the operational expenses of the power station.
Currently, the trial operation of the 800 MW unit is underway, with the power station having already generated a maximum output of 250 MW. While the trial operation is ongoing, TANGEDCO remains focused on achieving operational stability and resolving any teething problems that may arise during the initial phase of commissioning.
“Given that this is the first supercritical plant with a generation capacity of 800 MW, it is natural to encounter some challenges during the initial stages of operation,” remarked TANGEDCO sources. “However, with diligent monitoring and proactive measures, we are confident of overcoming these challenges and ensuring the seamless functioning of the power station.”
