Udhagamandalam, May 19, 2024 – The annual Ooty flower show, which was originally scheduled to conclude on Sunday, has been extended by three additional days due to an unprecedented influx of tourists. The extended event will now continue until May 22 at the Government Botanical Garden (GBG) in Ooty, announced the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department.
The Nilgiris district, renowned as a popular summer retreat and tourist destination, becomes a hub of floral splendor each year. To enhance the summer experience for visitors, the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department organizes an annual flower exhibition that has become a staple event in the region.
This year marks the 126th edition of the Ooty flower show, which began on May 17. The event has attracted around 70,000 visitors so far, indicating its continuing appeal and success. The garden has been transformed with nearly five lakh flowering plants and 45,000 flower pots on display. Exhibitors from across the country have showcased a vibrant array of flowers including Inca Marigold, Dahlia, Daisy, Zinnia, Salvia, Ageratum, Daisy White, Delphinium, and various Anthurium plants.
Adding to the grandeur of the event is a themed rose show, inaugurated on the same day, centered on “Save Wildlife.” Highlights of this rose show include intricate floral sculptures of elephants, pigeons, and tigers, all crafted entirely from roses. One of the star attractions is a 35-feet-tall Disney World castle made from one lakh multi-colored roses, which has captivated the imagination of attendees.
The Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department’s decision to extend the flower show until May 22 aims to accommodate the swelling number of tourists eager to witness the elaborate floral displays. To ensure a seamless experience for visitors, additional arrangements, including enhanced bus transportation services, have been implemented.
