The founder of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), S Ramadoss, has issued a strong call for the immediate enactment of the Right to Services Act in Tamil Nadu, citing widespread corruption and delays in obtaining essential government certificates. In a recent statement, Ramadoss highlighted the urgent need for legislative action to ensure timely and corruption-free public services.Ramadoss alleged that citizens are being forced to pay bribes ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 10,000 to secure important documents from various government departments. āDespite paying bribes, the services are not provided on time,ā he said, criticizing the current system’s inefficiency. He also pointed out the discrepancy between the government’s promise of accessible services through e-seva centers and the reality, where people still need to visit government offices in person to get their work done.
“The government has a responsibility to curb bribes and ensure timely services,” Ramadoss emphasized. He argued that the Right to Services Act is the most effective solution to address these issues. The Act, which has been implemented in 20 states including Kerala and Karnataka, sets a timeline for the delivery of public services, thereby ensuring accountability among government officers.
Ramadoss reminded the public and the government of the DMK’s 2021 Assembly election promise to implement the Right to Services Act, which was also mentioned in the Governorās address. “But, nothing has happened since then,” he lamented, urging the current administration to fulfill its commitment.
The Right to Services Act aims to reduce corruption by holding government officials accountable for providing services within a specified time frame. This legislative measure is seen as a critical step towards ensuring transparency and improving the overall delivery of public services.
