As the peak summer heat intensifies, bore wells in many tenements and apartment complexes across Chennai have begun to dry up, prompting the Metro Water Department to urge residents to use water wisely. This measure aims to prevent undue strain on the city’s water resources during this critical period.According to the Metro Water Department, Chennai’s water manager has been supplying an impressive 10.86 million litres of water per day (MLD) through a dedicated pipeline network. This water supply services a wide range of residential setups, including tenements constructed by the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB), Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB), and the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). Additionally, private apartments, as well as central and state government quarters, benefit from this supply.
With bore wells drying up, the Metro Water Department emphasizes the importance of conserving water to ensure a sustainable supply for all residents. They have called on the public to adopt water-saving practices and avoid wastage to help manage the city’s water resources more effectively during the summer months.
This proactive approach by the Metro Water Department highlights the ongoing challenges of water management in Chennai, particularly during peak summer, and underscores the importance of collective responsibility in conserving this vital resource.
