In a significant move to streamline commuting in Chennai, the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) is set to introduce a common mobility app. This innovative application aims to enhance convenience for commuters by integrating various transport services, including cabs and auto-rickshaws from providers like Ola and Uber, for seamless first and last-mile connectivity.
During a recent pre-bid meeting, firms interested in developing the multi-modal journey planner and QR-based unified app discussed the critical need to incorporate e-auto, cab, and taxi services into the system. The envisioned integration will allow commuters to generate a single ticket covering their entire journey, encompassing public transport options such as buses, trains, and metro rail, along with intermediate public transport like autos and cabs.
CUMTA officials have revealed that the first phase of the project will see the implementation of a common ticketing system for Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) buses and the Chennai Metro Rail, expected to launch by the end of the current year. The second phase will extend this integration to include local and suburban trains. Future phases will allow for the inclusion of private aggregators, ensuring a comprehensive and unified transport network.
The transport authority plans to open bids for the project once the election model code of conduct is lifted, with tenders to be awarded before the end of July. Following the awarding of the bid, the selected firm will have six months to develop the application.
This common mobility app is set to revolutionize commuting in Chennai by providing a more efficient and user-friendly system, ultimately enhancing the overall travel experience for the city’s residents.
