The recent police raid on private college PG hostels near Tambaram has brought to light a troubling rise in drug use among students in the area. The raid, which resulted in the seizure of various narcotics and the arrest of several individuals, has sparked concern among authorities, educational institutions, and parents about the growing drug culture infiltrating college campuses.

Acting on a tip-off, a team from the Tambaram police conducted a surprise raid on multiple paying guest (PG) accommodations used predominantly by students from nearby private colleges. The raid led to the seizure of significant quantities of drugs, including marijuana, LSD, and party drugs like MDMA. The police also recovered paraphernalia commonly associated with drug use, such as rolling papers, bongs, and other accessories.

During the operation, several students were apprehended, many of whom were found in possession of illegal substances. The police have arrested these individuals and are currently conducting investigations to trace the supply chain of the narcotics, suspecting a network of local and possibly international dealers involved in supplying drugs to students.

The raid has exposed a growing trend of drug use among college students, reflecting a broader issue that extends beyond this locality. Drug culture has slowly infiltrated student life, often under the guise of recreational use at parties or as a coping mechanism for academic and social pressures, says social activist Kannan.

Several factors contribute to this disturbing trend. Peer pressure, the desire for new experiences, and the stress associated with academic performance are common triggers for drug use among students. Easy access to drugs, often facilitated by networks within the student community, has exacerbated the problem. Furthermore, the perception of certain drugs as “less harmful” or “casual” has led to an increase in experimentation, often with dire consequences, he adds.

The impact of drug use on students is profound. It not only hampers academic performance but also affects physical and mental health, leading to issues such as anxiety, depression, and in extreme cases, addiction. The presence of drugs in educational institutions also creates an unsafe environment for other students, leading to a breakdown in discipline and trust within the campus community, says psychologist Dr Tamilanban.

For educational institutions, the rising drug culture poses a significant challenge. Colleges are now compelled to implement stricter monitoring and support systems, including awareness programs, counseling services, and collaboration with law enforcement to curb drug-related activities on their premises, states educationist Manavalan Prabhu.

The recent police raid on Tambaram PG hostels is a wake-up call for all stakeholders in the education sector. It highlights the urgent need for a coordinated approach to address the drug culture among students. While law enforcement plays a crucial role in cracking down on the supply and distribution of drugs, colleges, parents, and students themselves must actively participate in creating a safe, drug-free educational environment. Only through collective effort can the growing menace of drug use among students be effectively countered.
