The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) has again named S.P. Velumani, former Municipal Administration Minister and current AIADMK MLA, as an accused in a ₹98.25 crore contract fraud case.
The case relates to Velumani’s tenure as minister between 2014 and 2018. It alleges that tenders in Chennai and Coimbatore were given to companies linked to him, causing a big loss to the government.
His name was previously removed in 2022 by the Madras High Court. But the court allowed DVAC to include him again if enough evidence is found.
The DVAC told the court that the Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker approved his prosecution in February 2024. Justice N. Anand Venkatesh, who oversees corruption cases, is monitoring the case closely.
The allegations came from petitions by the anti-corruption group Arappor Iyakkam. They claim Velumani broke tender rules and favored shell companies for government contracts.
