The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert about the formation of a new low-pressure area over the Comorin region, southwest Bay of Bengal, and adjoining Sri Lanka around November 25.
This follows the persistence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the Comorin area and neighbouring regions, noted by the IMD on Monday morning. Alongside this, a well-marked low-pressure area over the Strait of Malacca and adjoining south Andaman Sea is expected to move west-northwestwards and intensify into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal within 24 hours.
It may soon strengthen into a cyclonic storm.Widespread rainfall continues across Tamil Nadu as this system influences the weather. Heavy rainfall has been reported particularly in districts such as Nellai (Tirunelveli) and Tenkasi. These areas, along with several others, have experienced intense and persistent showers causing local authorities to declare holidays in schools and colleges to ensure public safety.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast light to moderate rain spells accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in Chennai and its suburbs, along with strong surface winds of 30-40 km/h in isolated coastal locations.
Districts like Tirunelveli (Nellai) and Tenkasi are under alert for very heavy rainfall and the risk of flash floods in select areas. Residents have been advised to be cautious and avoid venturing into flood-prone zones.
Officials have also warned fishermen not to venture into the seas due to rough sea conditions expected as the cyclonic system develops.
This developing weather situation is part of a broader pattern of heavy rain and wind expected along the Tamil Nadu coast and adjoining regions, with the potential cyclone—likely to be named “Senyar”—expected to bring further intense weather in the coming days.
Residents are urged to stay updated with official weather advisories and take necessary precautions as the situation evolves.
