The Tamil Nadu government has issued firm instructions to officials and police authorities across the state following the shocking assault on a youth from Odisha in Tiruttani, stressing that the safety of people from other states living and working in Tamil Nadu remains a top priority.
The incident occurred on December 27 near the Tiruttani railway quarters, where a 34-year-old youth from Odisha, identified as Suraj, was brutally attacked with a machete by a group of teenagers.
The accused, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, also filmed the assault and circulated the video on social media, triggering widespread concern.
The victim, who sustained multiple cut injuries, was initially rushed to Tiruttani Government Hospital and later shifted to Tiruvallur Government Hospital for further treatment.
Acting promptly, the Tiruttani police registered a case, launched an investigation and arrested four juveniles involved in the assault. All of them were produced before the Juvenile Justice Board, where further legal proceedings are underway.
In a statement, the Tamil Nadu government clarified that the attack was an isolated incident and reaffirmed that Tamil Nadu continues to remain a safe and welcoming state for migrant workers and people from other regions.
Officials have been directed to:
Intensify police patrolling in areas with migrant populations
Monitor workplaces employing large numbers of out-of-state workers
Hold regular interactions with industry and labour representatives
Ensure swift legal action in any such incident
Authorities have urged the public not to share the assault video on social media, warning that such circulation may disturb peace, create unnecessary panic and affect social harmony.
The incident has also reignited concerns over violent acts being recorded and shared online for attention, with observers calling for stricter awareness and monitoring to prevent such behaviour.
Police investigations are continuing, even as the government reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order and safeguarding the rights and dignity of all communities residing in Tamil Nadu.
