Chennai, Apr 3:
The Madras High Court has quashed two election code violation cases registered against Union Minister L. Murugan.
The cases relate to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, during which Murugan contested as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from the Nilgiris constituency. One case alleged that he conducted a public meeting at a community centre in Kadanadu without obtaining prior permission. The matter had been pending before the Judicial Magistrate Court in Udhagamandalam.
In a separate instance, another case was registered against him for allegedly organising an election-related meeting at a school in Sathyamangalam in violation of prescribed norms. This case was pending before the Judicial Magistrate Court in Erode.
Murugan subsequently approached the High Court seeking to quash the proceedings in both cases.
Hearing the petitions, Justice A.D. Jagadish Chandira set aside both criminal cases, bringing an end to the proceedings related to the alleged election code violations.
