Chennai, May 2:

Dr. Mrs. Meena Muthiah, Kumara Rani of Chettinad, noted educationist, philanthropist and founder correspondent of Chettinad Vidyashram, passed away at the age of 91. A towering figure in the field of education in Tamil Nadu, she was widely respected for her vision, leadership and lifelong commitment to nurturing young minds.

Born on September 25, 1934, Dr. Meena Muthiah dedicated her life to building institutions that blended academic excellence with values and cultural grounding. Under her stewardship, Chettinad Vidyashram emerged as one of Chennai’s most prestigious schools. She also played a key role in establishing the Kumara Rani Meena Muthiah College of Arts and Science, extending her educational mission to higher studies.

A recipient of numerous honours, she was conferred the Param Acharya Award and several Lifetime Achievement Awards, including recognitions from Rotary (2007), Mega TV (2009), Raindrops (2015), and Womanation (2017). She was named among the top three women of Chennai by Sakhi Mandal Sahyog in 2009 and received the Tamilisai Seva Ratna Award in 2011. In August 2012, she was honoured as Citizen of the Year by Hamsadhwani. She was also awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) by Periyar Maniammai University.

In recognition of her efforts to preserve traditional arts, she received the Living Craft Treasure Award for 2016–17 from the Government of Tamil Nadu’s Poompuhar, for promoting Tanjore Art Painting. The award included a gold medal, citation and a cash prize of ₹1 lakh. In 2018, she was honoured as the Distinguished Woman of Madras during Madras Week celebrations.

Beyond academics, Dr. Meena Muthiah was deeply committed to social service. She actively led and supported several voluntary organisations, focusing on upliftment of underprivileged communities. Through initiatives like “Season of Sharing,” she encouraged students to engage in community service and social responsibility. She also promoted computer literacy in rural areas through collaborations with institutions such as Annamalai Polytechnic.

Her contributions extended to healthcare as well, with the establishment of the Kumara Rani Meena Muthiah Mother and Child Hospital at Kanadukathan, aimed at improving medical access for rural populations.

Known for her compassion, discipline and dedication, Dr. Meena Muthiah inspired generations of students, educators and social workers. Her passing marks the end of an era in Tamil Nadu’s educational landscape.

She is survived by her family, students and countless admirers. Tributes have been pouring in from across the state, remembering her as a visionary leader whose legacy will continue to shape lives for years to come.
