Chennai, July 4:
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has commenced work on the ambitious Chennai–Trichy Greenfield Expressway, a major infrastructure project set to transform connectivity in Tamil Nadu.
Spanning approximately 300 km, the ₹20,000 crore expressway will be a six-lane, access-controlled corridor designed for speeds of up to 120 kmph. Once completed, it is expected to cut travel time between Chennai and Tiruchirappalli from the current 5–6 hours to around three hours.
The proposed route will begin near Singaperumal Koil on the Chennai Peripheral Ring Road and pass through 12 districts, improving regional connectivity and easing traffic congestion. The project will also include a new bridge across the Cauvery River.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has urged the Union Government to expedite the project, highlighting its economic and logistical importance.
Officials noted that land acquisition and environmental clearances remain key challenges, particularly in forest and hillock regions. However, the state government has assured full support to fast-track approvals.
Once completed, the expressway is expected to significantly boost transportation efficiency, logistics, and economic growth across central Tamil Nadu.
