After crossing all hurdles both legally and politically, TVK Founder and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s eagerly awaited swansong film ‘Jana Nayagan’ will finally hit the screens on July 23.

After a six month delay, the film which was originally slated during Pongal festival release in Janury, but got delayed due to censorship hurdles, the film production unit on Wednesday afternoon officially announced that the film would be released in theatres on July 23, causing jubilation among scores of Vijay’s fans.

Directed by H. Vinoth, the film, produced by Venkat K Narayana under KVN Productions, was initially planned as a high-profile Pongal release. However, a prolonged censorship row forced the makers to push the release by nearly six months, eventually locking July 23 as the new date.

The production house recently confirmed that the film has received an ‘A’ certificate, sharing a new poster and stating that the film will meet audiences in theatres soon. Notably, Vijay was addressed as the “Honourable Chief Minister” in the promotional material for the first time.

Jana Nayagan is a remake of the National Award-winning Telugu film “Bhagavanth Kesari”, which starred Nandamuri Balakrishna and Sreeleela. The Tamil version is said to retain the emotional core while incorporating strong political undertones.

The film features an ensemble cast comprising Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde, Prakash Raj, Bobby Deol, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani and Narain. On the technical side, the film has music by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography by Sathyan Sooryan, editing by Pradeep E Ragav and production design by V Selvakumar.

The film will be seen in theatres about two seeks after getting the censor certificate on July 9. It has officially been granted an ‘A’ certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), thereby clearing the way for its theatrical release. The certification, listed on the CBFC’s official website, confirms the film’s running time at 183 minutes (3 hours and 3 minutes).

Originally slated for a Pongal release on January 9, the film faced prolonged delays due to certification issues. Submitted to the CBFC in December 2025, Jana Nayagan was initially expected received an U/A 16 rating. However, objections raised by a member of the examining committee led to the film being referred to a revision committee, delaying its clearance for several months, creating a turmoil considering Vijay’s political plunge and his strident attack on the BJP-led NDA regime at the centre.

The delay had disappointed fans eagerly awaiting in what is being billed as Vijay’s final film appearance. The project holds significant importance as it was intended to mark his cinematic farewell in the wake of his full-time political entry and becoming the Chief Minister in his maiden electoral foray.

The film has generated significant buzz not only for its star cast, but also for its political context, given Vijay’s position now as Chief Minister and the references to governance and public life within the narrative.

With the censor issues resolved and release date finalised, “Jana Nayagan” is now poised for a grand opening on July 23, with trade circles expecting a strong box-office response.
