India’s 5-3 defeat to Argentina is more than another disappointing World Cup result; it is a stark reminder of how far the team still has to go before it can genuinely challenge the world’s best. A 51-year wait for a World Cup semi-final is difficult to reconcile with India’s proud hockey legacy and the resources, talent and attention the sport commands. The most worrying aspect was not simply the defeat, but the manner of it. Argentina exposed India’s defensive frailties almost immediately, and a team chasing a must-win result never appeared fully in control of the contest.

There will understandably be questions over tactics and execution, but the problems appear deeper than one poor performance. India have repeatedly struggled to convert possession into meaningful attacking opportunities, while defensive lapses have proved costly against high-quality opposition. Conceding 16 goals in five matches is a statistic that cannot be brushed aside. Craig Fulton and his coaching staff must examine why the team repeatedly loses structure under pressure and why its intensity drops at crucial moments. Beating Pakistan 5-3 showed what this side is capable of; losing to England, the Netherlands and Argentina showed how inconsistent it remains. A team aspiring to return to the top cannot afford to oscillate so dramatically between promise and vulnerability.

The immediate classification match against Belgium is unlikely to erase the disappointment, but it should be treated as the beginning of an honest rebuilding exercise rather than merely a fight for seventh place. India need to strengthen their defensive organisation, improve circle penetration and develop greater composure in high-pressure matches. The Asian Games now assumes greater importance as an opportunity to restore confidence and momentum. India’s hockey heritage deserves respect, but heritage alone cannot win modern tournaments. If the 51-year semi-final drought is to end, India must confront its weaknesses without excuses and build a side capable of consistently beating the best, not merely occasionally troubling them.
