Chennai, Jan 27: In a commendable initiative to enhance citizen engagement and address local grievances, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is conducting “Area Sabhas” across the 200 wards of Chennai Metro City until February 8th. This participatory approach aims to empower citizens by providing them a platform to voice concerns and suggestions directly to city officials. The move comes in response to a directive from the State Government of Tamil Nadu, issued last year, mandating all City Corporations in the state to establish Area Sabhas. These meetings serve as forums for citizens to voice their grievances, ensuring a more inclusive and responsive local governance structure.
The State Government has further emphasized that local city administrations must conduct Area Sabha Meetings annually from January 25th to February 8th, fostering a culture of regular and open communication between the authorities and the public.
The Greater Chennai Corporation, in adherence to these directives, is meticulously organizing Area Sabha Meetings in all 200 wards of Chennai Metro City. The meetings offer citizens the opportunity to engage directly with officials and elected representatives.
The inaugural Area Sabha Meeting took place in the 74th ward of the Greater Chennai Corporation on Thursday, January 25th, as part of the first phase of this initiative. Chennai Metro City Mayor R. Priya actively participated in the meeting, listening attentively to the concerns voiced by local citizens.
