In a bid to enhance road safety and enforce traffic regulations effectively, the Chennai Metropolitan Police’s Traffic Division has intensified its efforts to address traffic rule violations through the issuance of e-challans. Cases of traffic violations in Chennai have prompted the traffic police to adopt a proactive approach by personally visiting the homes of offenders and issuing e-challans to ensure compliance with regulations. The introduction of the e-challan system in 2011 initially saw a commendable 91.7 percent immediate payment rate. However, subsequent delays in fine payment have led to a significant reduction in fine collections, with over 500,000 pending cases posing a challenge to enforcement efforts.
To tackle this issue, call centers were established in April 2022 by the Chennai Metropolitan Police’s Traffic Division. These call centers serve the dual purpose of reminding offenders about pending fines and facilitating the collection of fines. In the first six months of operation, an impressive Rs. 23.25 crore was collected from 918,573 cases, demonstrating the effectiveness of this initiative in streamlining fine collection processes.
Building on this success, the Chennai Traffic Police have initiated a new plan to issue e-challans directly to the homes of violators whose mobile numbers are not linked to vehicle registrations. This proactive measure aims to expedite the resolution of pending cases and ensure swift enforcement of traffic regulations.
