U.S. greenlights $20 bn arms sale to Israel

Washington, Aug 14:  The U.S. State Department has approved a significant arms sale to Israel, totaling $20 billion. This deal includes over 50 F-15 fighter jets, Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs), 120 mm tank ammunition, high explosive mortars, and tactical vehicles. The sale comes at a time of heightened tension in the Middle East, raising concerns about potential broader conflict in the region.

The arms package is designed to bolster Israel’s military capabilities over the long term, though the equipment will not reach Israel immediately. The contracts associated with the sale will span several years before completion.

This decision underscores the Biden administration’s efforts to support Israel while navigating growing domestic and international criticism. There is increasing pressure from lawmakers and the U.S. public to reassess military support due to the ongoing civilian casualties in Gaza.
