Following approval from the central government, a tender to select a concessionaire for the development of the second airport at Parandur, near Chennai, is set to be floated by early 2025. This announcement was confirmed by an officer from the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO).
The officer indicated that the tender process is anticipated to begin between January and March 2025, contingent on final approvals. The selected concessionaire will be responsible for developing the second airport on a revenue-sharing basis. Specific bidding parameters for the project are yet to be determined.
The process of land acquisition for the airport is currently underway. The proposed site spans 2,171 hectares across 13 villages. This area includes 1,386.43 hectares of agricultural land, 577 hectares of water bodies, and 173 hectares of government or poramboke land. The development of the airport is a significant undertaking, requiring extensive coordination and planning.
Last month, Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Kinjarappu Rammohan Naidu, addressed the Rajya Sabha regarding the steering committee’s recommendation for site clearance for the Parandur airport. This recommendation marks a crucial step towards advancing the project.
To move forward, the Detailed Techno Economic Report (DTER), which includes master plans, layouts, and traffic projections, has been submitted to the state government. For central approval, the DTER must be reviewed by several agencies to obtain the necessary No Objection Certificates (NOCs).
The development of the second airport at Parandur is poised to enhance Chennai’s aviation infrastructure and accommodate the growing demand for air travel. The project is expected to have a significant impact on regional connectivity and economic growth.
