Chennai experienced a major power blackout late Thursday night after a fire broke out at the 400 kV Manali substation. The incident led to the tripping of several substations, causing disruptions in electricity supply across various parts of the city.
The Manali substation is closely linked to the North Chennai Thermal Power Station. Following the fire, multiple substations, including those at Tondiarpet, Basin Bridge, and Pulianthope, were affected, according to sources from TANGEDCO (Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation). This resulted in power outages in areas such as Manali, Madhavaram, Kolathur, Tondiarpet, Purasawalkam, Perambur, Otteri, Egmore, T. Nagar, and Adyar.
As the blackout occurred around 10 p.m., many residents took to social media to express their concerns and seek explanations for the sudden loss of electricity. TANGEDCO’s official social media accounts were flooded with queries from consumers, eager to know the cause of the outage.
In response, TANGEDCO Chairman and Managing Director Rajesh Lakhani assured the public that efforts were underway to bypass the damaged equipment and restore power as swiftly as possible.
