With a red alert issued for Chennai on October 16 by the Indian Meteorological Department, the city is preparing for heavy rainfall, causing a wave of panic buying among residents. The Greater Chennai Corporation is ramping up efforts to mitigate the impact of the expected downpour, while schools and colleges will remain closed on October 15 as a precautionary measure.
Speaking about the situation, a senior official from the Corporation stated, “We are taking all necessary measures to ensure the safety of the public. Drainage systems are being cleared, and emergency teams have been put on standby to address any flooding issues.”
Amid growing concerns, supermarkets and grocery stores have reported a surge in customers stocking up on essentials. “People are buying rice, milk, and other staples in large quantities. Shelves are emptying quickly,” said a store manager in T. Nagar.
To manage transportation during the anticipated heavy rain, Chennai Metro Rail has announced increased services. “We understand that people need reliable public transport, especially during such conditions. We have planned additional trains and extended service hours to accommodate passengers,” said a Chennai Metro Rail spokesperson.
Authorities are urging people to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. “We request the public to stay calm and avoid panic. Stay updated with official announcements, and do not venture out unless absolutely necessary,” added the Corporation official.
With emergency services on alert and preparations in full swing, the city is gearing up to face the expected deluge. The situation will be closely monitored, and updates will be provided as weather conditions evolve.
