Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma. Subramanian has assured the public that there is no need to panic over the HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) infection, as it typically resolves within 3-5 days.
Speaking to the media about the state’s response, he said, “We are closely monitoring the spread of HMPV infection. As soon as the infection was detected, we obtained comprehensive information and guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO). Tamil Nadu has initiated surveillance measures in line with these recommendations.”
The HMPV virus was first identified in 2001. While the infection has been confirmed in Tamil Nadu, the Minister emphasized that it is not a highly virulent virus. “There is no need for people to panic. Following basic precautions such as wearing masks and maintaining personal hygiene is sufficient,” he added.
The state government has intensified surveillance under the instructions of the central government. The Minister advised that:
People should wear masks and maintain physical distancing.
Washing hands with soap regularly is essential to prevent infection.
Those experiencing symptoms like cold or cough should stay in isolation for a few days, as the infection often resolves on its own.
Minister Subramanian reiterated that special wards in hospitals are unnecessary for this mild infection. He assured that those affected in Tamil Nadu are recovering well. “The government is closely monitoring the situation, and the Chief Minister is being regularly updated. There is no cause for concern,” he said.
He concluded by stating, “Experts have highlighted that we must adapt to living with viruses in the future. Simple precautions and public awareness will help manage infections effectively.”
